Help identifying helmet…..
I’ll be honest, I’m not a big collector of military memorabilia, not least because my wife has enough of my "stuff" to put up with! Even though I live on a farm there’s a limit to how much I can hide…… I do have a few military Land Rovers in various ages and states of decay, but that’s not why I’m here.
Way back when I was young, I’d guess the mid to late 1970’s, I was collecting stuff for a Scout "jumble sale" (not sure if they even exist any more, I’m no longer in the UK), and I picked up a helmet. Being a teenage boy, I instantly bought it (probably for a few pennies, it was the ’70’s) rather than put it out for sale. It’s been with me ever since. Today, cleaning out my office to create some space, I came across it and was just about to throw it in the back of an old British Army Land Rover - it seemed appropriate - when I wondered exactly what it was. To my teenage mind, back when I first got it, it looked like a paratrooper helmet so that’s what I always called it. Googling it today, from what I can see it’s a second world war "airborne" helmet. I’ve found mixed information about the distinctions between these helmets, but it has a leather chinstrap, a steel rim, yellow rubber padding, and the liner is stamped BMB. The date has suffered some wear, but looks to be 43 (the 3 is clear, only the top of the 4 remains). It’s painted with what looks like olive drab and black "camo" on the outside, the inside being olive drab except at the top which has a circle of black.
So, from that basic information can anyone tell me if it’s of interest, or should I just sling it in Pongo (the nickname of my Series III Army Land Rover) and forget about it?
Any advice would be much appreciated!
