Japanese helmet question

Hi all,
I hope someone can answer a question for me. At an estate sale today they were selling a jap helmet. It had a star in front and was greenish in color. The Green paint had been brushed on. The brush strokes were very evident. Is this how they painted the helmets or did some amateur take a brush to it.
