Chief Warden’s Helmet
This arrived on my doorstep this morning. An unexpected eBay gem, snagged for a more than agreeable price. I wasn’t in the market for one of these, but when I saw it I knew it was one I couldn’t let escape. This is my second white helmet, and probably not my last. Hunting for these helmets in good condition is an addictive practice, and one I’m likely to continue for some time.
This is an unusual one, as the shell is completely free of maker marks. I have checked thoroughly and found nothing. The liner is marked ‘Helmets Ltd I 1939′, which I believe is for the Helmets Wheathampstead company. It is a size 7 1/4, and in great shape. A few of the spacers between the liner and the shell came free in transit, but remain in place now that I’ve pushed them back in.
Overall a very handsome Home Fronter, with a few minor dings and scratches commensurate with period use, and some light rusting to the inside of the shell. One that’ll be hard to upgrade, certainly!
