Skull ring in wear

Going through old military photographs of my grandfather the other day, I noticed that he was among the many soldiers who wore a skull/death’s head ring.

The original picture is only 9.5 x 7.5 cm, so unfortunately, I can’t offer a super-clear close-up, but I thought the members of this sub-forum might want to see it anyway. From his rank, shoulder strap cypher and lack of decorations, the photograph can be dated to the October 1935 to August 1937 period:
