Giant Swastika Uncovered in Hamburg
A news story that popped up on BBC News this morning, concerning a giant concrete swastika uncovered during excavations on a sports field in Hamburg. It is apparently part of a Third Reich monument that once stood there, but that was demolished and covered over postwar. It was found when construction workers began excavating the ground to build new changing rooms on the site.
Interesting that even today, remnants of that period of history are still being discovered. The local authorities ordered the swastika to be removed via excavator, which proved impossible as it was too heavy. They now intend to destroy it with jackhammers, and then move the pieces. A shame that such a piece of history has to be destroyed, but then one must remember the modern attitudes and sensitivities towards such things.
