Unknown sword Chinese or Vietnamese?

This is a strange one. It looks like it’s a military sword of some description but the oriental equivalent to ersatz. It has a character on the blade and the guard if made of sheet pressed steel painted dark green. Any ideas as to origin or date? I’m thinking Chinese ww2 but not sure
