Need help! What is this Boyt 44 leather carrier for?

47" long and 6.5" in diameter, reinforced steel bands around the mid section

Looks similar the the German MG34/42 spare barrel carriers but leather instead of metal.

I couldn’t find anything like it, and neither could the seller.
