Weird Picture ID help

This picture has had me baffled for a while,

My wife got me this framed picture some years back at a yard sale. It’s a real photograph, someone punched holes in it for a 3 ring binder at one time, the left edge is real deteriorated. Rifle of course is a U.S. Model 1903 Springfield.

Someone mentioned to me that maybe it’s a WW2 French Resistance fighter, but the 1903 rifle really doesn’t fit for that in my opinion, I’ve never seen a picture in the history books of any French Resistance with a 1903, unless left over from WW1?

The picture looks "staged" propaganda? movie?

Text on picture says 1601-56AD

any ideas of who, what, when?
