Question about Edelweiss badges on visor caps

Hey guys, I’m a little confused about the nature of Edelweiss attachments on visor caps. At first I was under the impression that the only men who wore Edelweiss badges were those serving as a Gebirgsjäger.

However I have seen caps of a different service with them, like the cap attached below. And I have also seen Gebirgsjäger caps without an Edelweiss badge.

The cap attached is artillery. With the Edelweiss does it mean the original owner was just an artillery man stationed in the mountains?

My original concept of a Gebirgsjäger was that it was simply a "Mountain troop". But now I’m not really clear on the job of an actual Gebirgsjäger. For example, how would a Gebirgsjäger differ from say, a regular infantry man stationed in the mountains. (Or did white piped caps never have Edelweiss??)

Thanks for any help clarifying, guys.
