Feldpost: Edelweiss

Hello folks.

The second letter of two that I recently acquired in a small grouping. This one is far shorter than the other, and was posted in a much smaller envelope. The address information on the outside is identical, and so I believe this was sent subsequently or not long after the first.

Interestingly, this letter has a small paper edelweiss glued to it. Unfortunately, it seems that years of being folded has caused it to adhere to the paper at the opposite end and come away. Its original position can still be seen at the top of the page. It’s a shame, as gently peeling it back reveals it is very detailed and carefully coloured. I don’t dare try to remove it, for fear of damaging the letter. I will simply keep it as it is.

Another nice letter to a growing collection of feldpost. Always cheap, easy to store and a very personal insight into the war from the perspective of one individual. This won’t be my last.

Regards, B.B.

Eagle info please

Good morning, I have recently been offered this eagle. It’s got no swastika in the eagles claws just an empty circle. I have been advised it may have been made straight after the war. Any advice or information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Al

Deact Sten Mk V - reassessed.

A long Christmas break and some rather dull weather gave me a chance to catch up on some reading - namely, some of the more recent ‘Arnhem’ books I’d missed.

This in turn motivated me to go and find a ‘forgotten’ deact - my Sten Mk V, bought 20 years ago from Worthing Guns. I remember feeling a bit peeved at the time because ; -

- it was a ‘new-spec’ with welded bolt ( I couldn’t find an old-spec but hey ! - it was cheap …)
- It just didn’t seem to be dated ‘1944′ anywhere, which led me to assume it was post-War. But it looked nice enough.

No internet for me in those days but 20 minutes on Google this morning tells me : -

- Sten Mk Vs were produced between February and October 1944 ( after the beginning of November, they were stamped ‘Mk. 5′ ).
- my gun is marked ‘RTL’ beneath the magazine carrier and therefore originated at ROF Theale in Berkshire
- in common with many earlier Mk Vs, it has a Mk II magazine carrier clearly overstamped Mk V. The serial number is quite early.
- ‘RA’ stamped under the mag carrier indicates that the weapon was passed to the Rhodesian Army post-war.
-the foregrip is not original to the gun and is likely repro. But the fit is perfect and shape as per 1944 original - unlike some repros currently on e-bay.
- the barrel nut holder has the correct 12 holes.

So, it’s reasonably ‘Arnhem period’ correct and I’m suddenly much more pleased with it than I used to be.

Happy New Year ! cool militaria

Need help! Erinnerungsmedaille fur GrossDeutschland Division?

Happy New Year!!
I have been offered this but have not been able to find any on the Forum or via Google for comparison. It is in the Husken reference book, but I only have grainy shots of it which are of little help. The memorial medal looks to be of good enough quality to be period, but I would like to put it out for opinions please.
