Somme field walking - help needed

Hi all,
My first trip to the Somme this weekend and really looking forward to it.
I am staying at Bernafay Wood B&B, only there Sat through to Mon so time will be tight.
I have great interest in the area and the fighting that occured there and aswell as visiting the cemeteries and memorials, I hope to do some field walking and see some relics in their ‘natural habitat’.
With my limited knowledge I have decided to walk the area around Thistle Dump to High Wood and also Boom Ravine - are these good areas to see relics?
Are there other areas nearby that I should be exploring?
Any help with this from experienced visitors would be greatly received.
Mike

Wiki’s picture from Kentucky RZM “Erlaubnis” correspondence stamp.

Has anyone ever seen this stamp on the cello sweat shield in this posture before?

As some of you know, I have spent a fair time with the RZM data, and my understanding is this stamp was for correspondence
from a licensed maker with the RZM to ease the paper work in Munich. That is, it was intended to stamp correspondence,
not to be an RZM tag of the kind found in textiles.
I have seen it used once as an RZM tag, in fact, in a piece I own I got in the early 1970s.
I have never seen this stamp used in what I deemed to be an authentic cap.
Any other examples you might have I would love to see, so I may assess my own thoughts.

NY State Volunteers Metal - Spanish / Philippines War

On the back of picking up a WW1 NY State Medal I dug around and pulled out this New York State Spanish American War (and Philippines War) award that was given to what I think is my Great Great Grandfather on my mothers side.

Maker is Dieges & Clust 20 John St. NY

http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/orders…al-ww1-692699/

It was awarded to George H Miller, father of Henry John Miller who was my mothers grandfather. There was an earlier relative that fought in the civil war I am told. Their name was anglicised sometime after emigrating (1860’s) from Muller (I can’t put in the Umlauts) and were originally from Hesse Germany.

This medal was awarded to volunteers from the state of New York who served in the Spanish American War and also part of the Philippine American War. Apparently, the medal was given to all volunteers, including army and naval militia.

The obverse of the medal shows the army volunteer, in full gear, advancing on the foe. The reverse reads "Awarded by the State of New York To One Who Served the Nation With Honor 1898-1899-1900."

The award is bronze in color. The colors are a bit washed out.

I’m having trouble identifying this Bayonet. Any help is appreciated!

Hello -

There are no markings or engravings visibile. Seems to coincide with 1800 French design but several characteritics don’t align. Example: Hardwood handle versus brass, diamond shape inlay to secure handle attachment hardware, iron pommel (I think) vs. brass, pommel has a 90 degree flush versus about a 30 degree taper.

All metal parts seemed to be uniformly pitted vs. smooth. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Kriegsverdienstkreuz Klasse 1 mit schwertern

Cheers Everyone,

I just wanted to share a recent find of mine, a war merit cross first class with swords. I found this at an antique mall, and although it is rough, I couldn’t pass it up for $10. is there any way that it could be cleaned up a bit without damaging it?
