Some of you may have seen this photo that I have posted elsewhere on this forum. This young man was a school friend of my mother’s. He was approximately 16 years old. He did not last very long, just over 6 months. The dedication on the reverse is to my mother. This photo and the fact that a friend gave me a 1/9th scale german helmet started me on the road to create one of the most intricate items that I have made.
I started by detailing the helmet. I added the rivets and vent holes, I also had to add the lip. I then created two brass bands with working swivels and bales. I then made a real leather liner for it. After I had completed the paint and decals, and installed the liner, I thought very hard on how to display the helmet. My first thoughts were to make a long bayonet to put into some ground work and set the helmet on it. I felt that this was not good enough to show the amount of work on the inside properly.
So, what you see here is the result of circumstance.
My 1/9th scale Mauser K98. This piece consists of 153 individual pieces that are all hand made by me from scratch. It is made from steel, brass, wood and leather. The barrel is bored, but not rifled. The bolt action works, as does the safety. The stag handled bayonet comes off. The peep sights beneath the scope work. The leather shoulder strap has a working adjustable buckle. It is set on a base that I made that fits a clock dome over it.
Sorry for the long winded explanation, but believe me, creating it took a lot longer, (amost two years).:)
I hope you like it.
