Home of the Dambusters

I had lunch at the wonderful Petwood hotel in Woodhall Spa , Lincolnshire at the weekend.

There is an amazing display of Dambuster memorabilia there! Well worth a visit!

The large branch you see above the Squadron bar was extracted from a Lancaster after it had landed!

The hotel building served as a military hospital for injured soldiers during the Great War, but it is as the home of the legendary RAF 617 “Dambusters” Squadron in World War Two that Petwood is best known. Occupied from 1942, it was originally home to officers of the 97 and 619 squadrons, but with nearby Woodhall Airfield chosen as the operational base, 619 squadron moved away and the officers of 617 moved in.

Today, the Squadron Bar hosts a range of memorabilia and tributes to Guy Gibson VC, Leonard Cheshire VC and their Officers. Petwood was a scene of some jubilant celebrations with the breakthroughs made by Squadron 617, as well as tragic losses. We can only imagine the sheer bravery of the Squadron and the huge risks they took in enemy territory, facing death time and again. Guy Gibson alone, the Squadron’s heroic young Wing Commander, carried out over 170 raids by the age of 24. Just two years later he was killed in action.

East German NVA M56 helmets

Hi guys here I have a first pattern M56 East German helmet. The M56 was produced by Eisen und Hütte AG and the liners by VEB Sattler und Taucha Lederwarenfabrik. The design was originally a ww2 design which was to replace the German helmets in use but was refused by Hitler even though it was easier and cheaper to make and offered better ballistic protection. This particular model has a camo net in place and has been on there for a long time as it has left marks in the paint. The helmet has a stamp of II 3 61. II which means size 2 and 61 being the year of manufacture. It also has on the liner written in the word Storch (name?) but the word below it I cannot decipher.

SS/panzer ? Skull

Hi , I’ve seen this skull advertised for sale on a relics site , the ad states that it was ground dug in the halbe forest Berlin and its described as an SS cap skull, I’ve had a look on the forum and online and I can’t find anything that matches it, is this a modern creation or is it genuine? Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Sheepskin Cosy Toe

I picked this up last spring, I can only think its from a civilian airliner as I read an account of them being used in the 1930’s. It has a Lightning Zip.

I thought I would share the pictures in-case anybody else has more of an idea about it. It would keep my wife’s feet warm in the Jeep anywaycool militaria
