Found a quite fantastic old photo album at our local House Clearance shop a few days ago. The album containing 93 photographs belonged to a Sidney George Dawson who served with 661 Squadron Air Observation Post in Western Germany, though i believe he was with the unit assisting the Canadian 1st Army through France and Normandy in 1944 and was serving with the 661 beyond into the 1960’s. Sidney was born in Bedfordshire on 20th February 1929. One of the many photographs in the album shows Auster aircraft serial number 567 lying on its back in a field with Sid and some mates standing by it. I believe Sid was the pilot on this occassion when during take-off the engine failed and the aircraft struck a fence near the end of the runway ending up on its back, Both crew walked away unhurt! Sid also worked for the BBC and a brass plaque on his ink stand retirement gift states he was with them from 1944 to 1984 as a TCPD (Transmitter Capital Projects Department). He died 2nd June 2016 but can find no record of his wifes passing and apparently the couple had no children. They lived in Berryfield Road Evesham. Does anyone know how to access any RAF record?? As i am trying to produce a local tribute for Sid which can then be displayed in the Evesham Almonry museum. Any help would be gratefully appreciated and take a look at some of the pics from Sids album. Thanks Tim.
Does anyone know what the blue line signifies on the top of the bowl? Many DAF mess items I’ve found are usually found in red and occasionally green - never seen a blue one before! Do the colours indicate the type of factory that they would be used in? Even though this item is heavily worn with an unfortunate blemish over the DAF logo, the price is quite good at 37 EUR.
Any information would be greatly appreciated on this item All opinions welcomed!
Cheers, skip01.
These crosses (always the 1st class of the award) often show up on online auctions and dealer sites, usually with the claim that they were protoype specimens commissioned when the petition to re-introduce the Iron Cross was on the table or even that these are unofficial awards for veterans.
Said petition took place in 2007 and was (predictably) unsuccessful, although in 2008, the Bundeswehr’s new Ehrenkreuz für Tapferkeit was instituted.
Apparently - and quite amusingly - these so-called "2008 Iron Crosses" were based on a design made by the satirical magazine Titanic* in reaction to that new decoration for bravery.
In any case, it is safe to say that no prototype 2008 EKs were ever ordered by the Federal Government and that these crosses are pure fantasy pieces and should be treated as such. (I bought mine for some 20 Euros including postage, which I found acceptable, but some sellers offer these alleged "rare prototype pieces" for greatly inflated prices.)

Right, here it is. The cross is of simple, one-piece construction and unimpressive quality.
