I am contemplating adding this tab to my collection. it looks Ok to me, but would like input from the experts. Also, given that the buckram backing has deteriorated somewhat, should I wait for a better example? The asking price for this one is north of $300. Thanks.
The second item is a Waffenrock worn by Johann Linden who was in Infanterie-Regiment 105 (Grenadier-Regiment 105 by the time of Cherkassy). This was one of the encircled units. I look at his name tag and wonder if he had survived long enough to be one of the ~50,000 encircled Axis soldiers (I say Axis rather than just German as the Belgian Walloon Legion and the SS Wiking Division, which had a lot of Scandinavian volunteers, were also in the pocket). I think the odds are against Johann surviving all that time on the Eastern Front without being killed or seriously wounded long enough to be one of the soldiers in the pocket, (much less also survive the pocket if he indeed was). It’s just something to look at the tunic and wonder about… unless I get a real lucky research break and learn more about him.
Hopefully I’ve posted this on the correct forum.
I’ve came across a few Prussian badges that I would like second opinions on. They don’t have the casting flaw that is detailed in the thread FAKE World War I Imperial German Flight Badges which would immediately indicate a fake. The observers badge does have the black speckles in the red enamel that is mentioned in that thread. The stamped pilot’s badge has some unusual crazing/coloration that I’ve tried to capture in the photos. None of these badges have any marks that I could find.
Because these badges are so highly faked I would like some more eyes to take a look at them. I suspect if they are authentic that they are post-war from the 20s or 30s.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Here’s a helmet I got lucky acquiring this past November at a sleepy auction that I took a chance and drove 240 miles in order to attend in Kansas City, Missouri. I got lucky because there were not any other collectors bidding against me, only 2-antique dealers/resellers.
Helmet was worn by a Reserve Officer for Jaeger zu Pferde Regiment 8 through 13.
The fluted spike, spike base, and the top ring on the neck of the spike are tombac color.
Underside of front visor is lined in fine green color calfskin. Underside of back lobster tail visor is covered in a creme color velvet cloth.
The calfskin sweatband has been torn at some point of time, and someone in the past did a fairly good job of stabilizing the tear line, which also helps to hide the tear somewhat.
I also had to replace a missing domed split brad on one side of the front visor, and I found a domed threaded screw for one that was missing from the spike base.
Best Regards,
Alan
I’m a collector in the USA (mainly WW2 and earlier militaria, with a focus on the A-H empire as well as U.S. Navy collectibles). I enjoy conserving/refurbishing/restoring (depending on the item) antique and other firearms and militaria. I just started getting into collecting helmets and have a few projects in the works. I just started documenting my restoration of a WW1 German Infanterieschild that was dug out of the ground in Latvia (Youtube channel name: usna98). I hope to learn as much as I can from all the members here and their wealth of knowledge. Thanks for adding me to the group!
Cheers,
Matt
