I recently purchased this M31 canteen and cup, which, I knew was not a good idea and was dubious about the whole thing anyway, but I had money burning a hole in my pocket and wasn’t thinking straight. Anyway, here is the cup, it weighs only 30g, and is slightly bendy. It doesn’t feel right at all and am 90% sure it’s not bakelite. It is also using the markings commonly found on the reproduction ones, and has a strange lip around the edge. The canteen itself appears to be ok, the felt cover is marked SMM37, and seems to have brass poppers. It is also named with a nametag, and the bottle itself has an RZM mark (however no other markings), which I again find odd. Here are the pictures, let me know what you guys think (I apologise about the poor pictures, for whatever reason the one has rotated itself however the RZM mark is readable):

I acquired this one from Chris Jones over 20 years ago. It is a very late War M42, a CKL64, lot number 5586, complete with liner and chin strap. I bought it because of the subdued Adler decal. I know these are controversial on late War M42’s but I think this one has a slim chance. The helmet appears to have actually seen some War time use and does not appear to me to be one of those mint unissued M42’s “liberated” from that rail road car we all have seen in that famous picture. The liner shows some wear and sweat stains and the chinstrap has been shortened. The bird shows some wear as well. Has it been on the piece since ‘45? Who knows? But to me it doesn’t matter since I like it and intend to keep it. Anyway, here it is - have at it! Jim G.
