Hello I’m looking for a project (like I need another…),

I’ve acquired a solid M1 shell. It’s a rear seam with clasps holding the chinstrap on. Someone has repainted it and really did a sorry job. They used a brush, so the entire helmet inside and out is covered in brush marks. It appears it was repainted to look WWII era. For $10 couldn’t pass it up. I know it’s a Vietnam era helmet because when I was trying to read the numbers stamped into the brow, I found a guy’s last name and service number (barely legible) with a letter prefix (Conscripted Enlisted Personnel). Where I am getting at is should I repaint the helmet? It’s not original the way it is and the layers of paint are thick. Recorking methods with sand? What paint (preferably a Rustoleum or Krylon)? Clear coat? Would I be better off with a spray gun to attach to my compressor? I’m pretty wide open when it comes to restoring this helmet as I have almost any metal working and abrasive tool there is.

Please note: I am US based so I need items obtainable from Lowe’s or Home Depot.

I know the veteran members here get tired of seeing the post about opinions on eagles and skulls. But, I’m not one of those one timers who don’t contribute to this site. I have been taking the advise of others and searching comparison pictures to educate myself more.

I believe the two prong eagle is original, due to the finish and detail. The 3 prong is more suspect, but just not sure. If I could please get some opinions on these, I would appreciate it.

I’m fairly new to collecting militaria, but have collected other things for many years. I started out with coins and moved to cameras. I have put the cameras aside for now as I can’t find something I don’t have or someone has jacked the price up real high. Cameras are also harder to sell. I recently started full time collecting militaria. My knowledge on this stuff is pretty low, but I’m learning! My Third Reich collection is pretty small as it only contains a London newspaper with headlines with reports of Hitler firing generals and his assassination attempt at Wolf’s Lair, stamps, Reichsmarks and Pfennigs, a Mutterkreuz 2nd Class, and what I thought was an M38 gas mask and canister which turned out to be DAGSA Spanish copy for the Spanish Civil War. My American collection is pretty low also. I still pick up WWII items when I can, but I primarily focus on the DDR. I’m only lacking a few more things for the basic field uniform.

One is very late one of the last produced,the other is early.Early is 68392 late is 460070 thats almost 400,000 pistols apart.You can sure tell it too by looking at them.Bet they will both still do the job intended!
