Lower shelf helmets - a saved Winter cammo M40

I got this from member ‘Kradspam’ - Andy - years back who old members may recall started the 1000 post helmet round the world trip…….;)

well, Andy doesn’t post anymore but this helmet was saved by him - it had a TRAGIC garish enamel post war cammo over-paint which he successfully removed revealing the remains of an earlier winter paint job. A Quist 64 ( they of the oversize vents ) which is in Luftwaffe blue and, impossible to photograph - the remains / shadow of the flying Adler.

What on earth caused the liner to go like that is beyond me but believe it or not, it is still pliable and quite soft and strong on the inside……

Its NOT a pants wetter but I still thought you’d like to have a gander at it???
Cheers, Dan

Pair of German POW Letters

Hello folks.

I grabbed these off eBay in the midst of my feldpost binge. Browsing listings for letters, I spotted these. Two very interesting and, I believe, somewhat unique pieces of correspondence between a German prisoner of war and someone at home. As usual, I’m stumped by the language barrier, but the British stamps speak for themselves.
I’m unsure as to whether this man was a prisoner in a camp situated on the British Isles, or whether he was held elsewhere. The letters, spanning two years, are dated 1946 and 1947 respectively. Both are faded and very frail. They have spent virtually all their time since I had them tucked into a folder with the rest of my feldpost collection.

They have all the hallmarks of very old paper, and seem to have been cherished by the recipient for a very long time. I’d be interested to know what these letters say, as an insight into the world after the war.

Apologies for the glare in the photographs.

Best regards, B.B.

Question Clutching Eagle Badge

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am trying to track down this exact eagle badge for a project I am working on. I have no idea which era, country or military group it is from.

If I had to guess I think they are approximately 3′ wide.

Thanks for any help given.

I-33 Submarine Album

Hi everyone,

I thought that I would share some interesting pictures from a photo album that I purchased several years ago. Actually, the photos are contained within a larger family album that includes numerous wartime pics and scenes. The I-33-related shots include a crew photo and a series of shots of what appear to be memorial services.

The tragedy (x 2) of the I-33 due to accidents is well documented. During September 1942, the sub collided with a coral reef and damaged a torpedo tube and during the latter part of that month went to Truk for repairs. While the tube was under repair, the aft of the sub suddenly flooded and the ship sank to a depth of 33 meters……33 crewmen (about half of the total crew) died. The I-33 was soon raised and refurbished, but on 3 June 1944 it sank during dive training. Ninety-two crewmen lost their lives during this second accident, however, three managed to escape and survive. The I-33 was raised by the Hakysei Ship Industry on 23 July 1953. The remains of at least thirteen of the trapped crew members were found, along with suicide notes.

I’m hoping that members (i.e., Nick, Guy) much more knowledgeable than myself can perhaps provide more insight into the photos…..are these actually memorial services and could they be for those whom perished in the first accident? Are there any recognizable officer’s or dignitaries seated/standing in the outdoor ceremony? I notice in the large warehouse scene that there are approximately 32 or 33 potted plants/trees…are each of these for the 33 crewmen who were lost? Are the sailors in the individual photos submariners (based on the kanji on the hat bans)?

I appreciate any help that you can give me and your comments. Thanks.

Tom

Commemorative spanish German medal…..

I know on.my what I’ve read in the archives here and on Wikipedia. I know I read in the archives here, three should be a, "1," on the ring, which isn’t present on this medal. So I’m guessing this isn’t original? Can anyone tell me this is an original piece? Thanks.

Carved wooden bread plate……

I know something like this must be really hard to authenticate. Does anybody have any opinions for me? I’ve read a little about these in the archives and just what I found on Google. Do they look original? Thanks.

SS collar tabs

Hi everybody,
I would like you to give me your opinion on these collar tabs. I think you will confirm that the pattern woven in aluminum wire is genuine, but the other, embroidered, I really do not know whether it is good or bad.
All your opinions are valuable to me
Regards
Jack
