One of three feldpost letters that I purchased as a lot, and that I will post in separate threads. They were being sold for a good price, and I’ve always loved the more personal artifacts of the war.
I’m almost entirely certain they’re authentic. They have the right age, feel and look to them. Not entirely sure the photographs in each envelope are relevant to them, or if the seller simply added one to each to increase the appeal to buyers. With this one, at least, the date written on the back of the photograph matches the date of the letter. I believe this is an authentic ‘grouping,’ for lack of a better term.
The letter is addressed to a Frau Hilde, although I can’t read the surname. I believe the soldier’s name is Walt, from the signature at the bottom, but that’s an educated guess on my part. I’ve always had difficulty with translating period German handwriting, and would appreciate some help from those more fluent than me. Being penned in the last weeks of the Battle of Stalingrad, I would be interested to know what this young man was writing home about.
Regards, B.B.
