SS KZ Premium Coupon System

SS money tokens, or camp scrip, are amongst the more interesting areas of everyday life within the concentration camp system, with a whole variety of examples of premium coupons being produced at the many camps during the Third Reich era. From the beautifully produced Theresienstadt notes, which rival any regular currency for quality and detail, to the crude theatre ticket type used at KZ Holleischen, the variations are many.

Below is an excerpt from a May 1943 SS document regarding the "regulations for granting special privileges to prisoners"…

"Prisoners who distinguish themselves through their hard work, conscientiousness, good conduct and exceptional performance shall receive privileges. These consist of the following…

1. Improved conditions
2. Food allowances
3. Premium coupons
4. Tobacco allowances
5. Brothel visits"

SS leadership ordered special bonuses to increase the productivity of concentration camp prisoners. Prisoners were to receive premium coupons for outstanding work productivity. These could then be exchanged for additional food, tobacco, or a visit to the camp brothel. Often, the coupons were distributed at random. Jews however, were strictly prohibited from receiving these coupons.

Following the introduction of the premium system, the SS ordered the establishment of brothels in all concentration camps. In July 1943, female prisoners from the Ravensbruck concentration camp were forced to work as prostitutes at KZ Flossenburg. Below is an example of a scarce Waffen-SS stamped 1944 pattern 1RM premium coupon from Flossenburg. The format was used in 1944 at six other camps, namely KZ Auschwitz, KZ Gross-Rosen, KZ Mauthausen, KZ Natzweiler (only one known example), KZ Neuengamme and KZ Ravensbruck.

Regards,

Carl

Kl Gross - Rosen Ausweis

Hello to all,
this arrived yesterday with the post, an ausweis of a aufseherin. I searched for the name, the place and by her number, but could only found that in that camp some 500 women where trained to do gaurd duties.
The picture looks good, the needles (d’ont know the word in English) that attach the picture are rusted and have given some color of to the picture.
The signature of the commanding officer seems to be Hassebroek, ( but this is not confirmed, the signature is very difficult to desipher ) but if it is him, after some research I found that an ss Sturmbannfuhrer Johannes Hassebroek whas camp commander in 1943 - 1944 in the camp of Gross - Rosen.
The pattern of the letters of al the words seem to be good.
the red line across the card is done later, but d’ont know how the black colors got onto the paper, maybe done later, or maybe the card itself is a reproduction?
The last photo is a photo of the backside
Still it seems a very nice item,
Greetings, Simon
