Wewelsburg Castle

Visited Wewelsburg Castle last May and it was a very interesting place. It was used by the SS under Himmler and became a central SS cult site.

Anti-Flash Hood

Here is something I know nothing about. I picked this up in a lot, together with an Argentinian M1 helmet, and some 7.62 cases dated 1978. The helmet looks OK for the Falklands War era, but I have drawn a blank on dating this hood. It does not feel like 100% cotton, as I know these were changed to cotton after the Falklands. Any ideas if this is correct for the Falklands era? Is the 78 on the label the date of manufacture?
Thanks in advance,

Andy

1935 graf zeppelin cigarette case

Hi, I’ve been offered an original souvenir cigarette case. This things were bought onboard whenever a trip was done. This particular case seems to be engraved Von Schiller (Captain) and Preuss (Engineer). The seller is asking 1500usd and I have not seen enough items of this kind to compare. I am most grateful for any opinions whether it’s a fair deal or not. Thanks!!
By the way: case is stamped 935. Onix stone seems likely for the opening button and three stones at the front where the cities RIO-PERNAMBUCO-HAMBURG are detailed. Just one small gem missing for BERLIN. Excellent condition though.

War tales from USSR

Hello Gents,

I have decided to make a thread on tales from the war in USSR. I got the inspiration from another thread not really having anything to do with this topic. As i said almost everybody here have a story to tell and have family members killed in the war. Even my wife is not that old, she have a lot of stories to tell from our family. She is very interested in family history and WW2. It’s amazing what she knows actually. Both grandfathers served of course. On fathers side a pilot that made it all through the war. He was also in Berlin and finished in Budapest. The other one became a POW but was returned to USSR later. Many more family members served as well. Many stories to tell.

I will not update this thread often as it takes time to research all this. I do this because i want their stories to live on and i think this is great place to do so. I also think they deserve it.

Here is a brother of her grandmother on mothers side. His name is Nicolai. His brother Pavel i do not have pics of at the moment. Both went to the front after one month of training. Nicolai entered the war in 1943 at the age of 17 yrs old. His brother Pavel at the age of 16 yrs. I will update the older brothers story as soon as i get more info. At the moment i have most on Pavel’s story. Quite interesting.

Pavel went to the army for one months training before going to the front. When his training was over he was granted a one day leave to go and visit his mother. He arrived in a uniform much too big for him, almost not able to carry his rifle. As grandmother said "he was just a small boy and they all cried when he left, because they knew he would never make it". He had to meet on troop transport the following day. He went Narofominsk. He was killed in battle after only two days.

Nicolai made it all through the war. He was a very skilled harmonica player and started a harmonica school after the war. I do not have much on him at the moment, but here is Nicolai’s pics.

During or after the war

Named and researched Navy Binocular grounddig Argonne woods

My brother Jan and I did a lot of searching on the Verdun & Argonne battlefields of WW1 in Northern France.

This is an amazing story of an US Navy binocular that was found near the Kaiser tunnel in the Argonne woods, the WW1 battlefield of The US expeditional Forces.
My brother collects binoculars and recently an add came up on marktplaats : a binocular that was found near the Kaisertunnel in the Argonne woods.
My brother bought that old Binocular, it had some nasty wear on the alu parts ( swolling up more then 3mm on some places), the original brown leather was all gone and the brass pieces were almost black.
Still he tought it had potential, it was a type that he had never seen before.
Normally things are kept the way we find them, but he decided that this could be worth all the effort!
His goal was to restore the binocular to its former glory, it costs him a lot of time but the result is fabulous!!
What stroke him when he cleaned it, was the service number of the former navy owner engraved in it, when he removed the old layers of paint: No 5202
Because he did a total restauration the No5202 became visual!!
Now the hunt for the man behind the binocular gegan.

The history of this soldier is known, it recently came up:
World War I Collector - WW1/WW2 Memorabilia Collection - Griffith, Charlie W.

Now the markings are clear also: V.N.S. visual navy service or Visual News Service
He prob. had lost it while he was on a reconnaissance flight above the trenches, right in front of the Kaisertunnel were the US lines!!!!
some info about his squadron
436th BOMBARDMENT SQUADRON
or on wikipedia i quote:
" the First Marine Air Squadron which deployed to France as the newly renamed 1st Marine Aviation Force in July 1918[7] and provided bomber and fighter support to the Navy’s Day Wing, Northern Bombing Group".
United States Marine Corps Aviation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cheers,
Ger

Argentinian M1

This is my latest acquisition, a rear seam Argentinian M1 from the Falklands war era. It came as a lot, with the 7.62 cases and a Royal Navy anti-flash mask. The Mitchel cover is stuck to the pot, and the pot and liner have been together for a long time. The liner is interesting, it’s not American, possibly Argentinian production? There are no markings on the liner, and no soldier information scribbled inside the pot as is sometimes the case, and no heatstamp.
Comments welcome.

Best Regards,

Andy
