I’m really puzzled! If I wanted to forge a belt buckle I would take an imprint of a genuine, certified original, make an exact mold and reproduce everything exactly as I see it on the original, onto the fake… for example, a proper eagle with an eagle’s head, I would get the feathers to look like the originals, the beak, copy the maker’s stamp, etc. etc. What I don’t understand is… when I look at the pictures of forgeries with their diamond shaped feathers, pigeon heads, badly produced rope, invented makers’ names, things missing, things added… etc etc. why would a forger be so careless… and so stupid, they must be aware that these obvious mistakes will be spotted? On the other hand, it’s also a worry that buckles that have been passed as 100% genuine by experienced collectors, have been judged genuine only because everything looks correct. This means that if a forger does actually decide to reproduce everything exactly as he (or she) sees it on the original, there would be absolutely no way of telling the difference… am I correct with this assumption? Maybe… and this is a scary thought :o( … some bad fakes have been spread about purposely to make the more exact copies look genuine… a sort of "double-bluff"? Apart from carrying out some lab’ tests on metals used, paint, rust, or dirt aging, etc. it would seem to me as a complete novice and new collector, that one can never, ever, be really, really, really 100% certain… I would love to hear what others have to say about this, as it just doesn’t make any sense to go to all the trouble of forging something that doesn’t look like the real thing! Thanks for reading this and if you have any views, answers, advice, etc. please, please let me know… Cheers!
hi everyone, just wondered what you think of this iron cross?
I have them for about two years, and want to know opinions about their originality, as I have personal doubts about them. I'am not a professional on the badges and awards area.
Thanks in advance.
Hey, guys. Just thought I'd share the pics of these 2 new HJs my friend sent me. I really like the Assmann for it's multiple markings and the early "UE"...also just a very nice looking one that is also shown in David's thread on nickel/silver Assmann HJ's.
The gleaming look of the second one is really nice, I think. RZM 50 would appear to identify this as an earlier buckle. As presented in David's thread on early buckle markings, I believe it corresponds to M1/50 Richard Sieper & Sohn, Lüdenscheid, a maker I don't know a lot about, especially in regards to HJ buckles.
Any comments or thoughts on these two are welcome and much appreciated. :)
Best,
Adam
Hi. I feel a bit of a fraud being on such a knowledgable forum but I need some basic information about SS-Totenkopf uniform. I’m working on a film and one of our characters is an Totenkopf officer at Auschwitz in 1944 and I’m a bit confused on what collar tabs to give him. Should it be bullion/metal thread or embroidered and should it be horizontal or vertical? Was it personal preference? Help! I so want to get this correct.
Hello ,does anyone have a copy or access to this book, thanks Dave.
Hi Everyone,
Bought this medal last week, I was wondering if members had come across this particular P.O.W. medal 2,6 cm x 4 cm) before, the small folded ribbon has Bavarian army colours, reading the citation he was a POW in the years 1917 -19. Does any member have additional information i.e.which organization struck it ? perhaps a veteran’s organization or maybe a Freikorp based in Bavaria, I’ve googled through the net and looked through various collectors period books without turning up another one, any further information or its possible value appreciated.
Best Wishes
