Ordinance Identification

Recently acquired the item below. Am familiar with firearms but have no experience with this type of ordinance.

Would appreciate any help you can offer to identify this item, its purpose, history, and if there is any danger associated with keeping it in the condition shown.

Headstamp (correct term?) contains the following:
W N Y
903
6-Pdr
E.C.P. (anchor symbol) W.McD

Band at top of casing is marked:
R.E.I. (anchor symbol)

Unable to locate any markings on iron projectile.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

British-contract Ballester-Molina

I recently received this HAFDASA Ballester-Molina, one of about 8000 purchased by the British in 1940-1942. The Ballester is kind of a neat pistol, it was commissioned by the Argentines as a less expensive alternative to the DGFM M1927 (a liscense-built M1911A1). It uses the same mag and the barrel is interchangable, but otherwise it's a different pistol - in fact the lockwork has more in common with a Star than a Colt.

The British ones are espescially interesting as the bulk of them went to the SOE, with the remainder going to the 8th Army in North Africa. They were never actually given the standard British proofs (I guess because they were intended for the SOE...) and can be identified by a B-prefix serial on the frame, which is actually different from the factory serial number stamped on frame, barrel and slide.

Mine is generally in good shape, with a great bore, but has some odd pitting on the left of the slide - I think maybe from improper storage. The mag doesn't match, in fact it's a 1911 mag, but on a whole I'm very pleased with it. A neat pistol with a fascinating history - I wish it could talk.

British Medals, need identification

Hi All

The picture is of a friend of mine's fathers ribbon bar and dress medals. He served with the Royal Engineers and the Airborne division during the war. Unfortunatley the identity of all of his medals is not known. THe bronze stars appear to be service medals for the theaters he served in but the rest we are unsure about.

The help of the experts on here would be appreciated.

Thanks & Regards

Newbie, Unknown Helmet Type

Hi All

A pal of mine found this helmet in an outhouse on his property that an old friend had used as a storeroom. It appears to have three layers of paint. The original may have been brown, there is then a layer of black, and possibly a third layer of white, someone has attempted to scrape the two outer layers off.

There is little left of the liner, but the leather that is there appears to be quite old and was rivited to the shell.

I could find no identifying marks or numbers anywhere on the helmet.

Any help identifying it would be appreciated.

Regards

Metheringham Airfield visitor centre - Lincolnshire

I visited Metheringham Airfield visitor centre which is south of Lincoln. Its a very small museum which holds the history mainly of 106 sqn R.A.F. Guy Gibson served in this sqn before the Dambusters. Parts of his wheel hydraulic from his Mosquito which he piloted and died with, is housed here.
Also Norman Cyril Jackson VC was with 106 sqn. His aircraft was hit by an enemy fighter and the engine caught fire. Jackson climbed out onto the wing and attempted to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. Battling against 200mph winds he was hit in the leg and blown of by the wind as the Geman plane returned to attack his plane. He also suffered burns to his hands and face as well as a broken ankle after landing. He was captured by the Germans, escaping over a yaer later and making contact with the US army.
Part of the museum (pictures shown) is of parts of a Lancaster returned after being found in Holland as well as a life raft and emergency equipment.
Hope its of some interest.

DAK web belt

Hi all, got this from an old guy today. It's in excellent condition apart from fraying on the stitched ends,It only has only the size marked on the belt and leather tongue, size 85 which is small. Does it look O.K.? Cheers, Roland.

mk3 helmet with early liner

The liner in this helmet looks like the early type fitted to mk2 helmets. Can anyone say if they were fitted to mk3 helmets as well? perhaps reused liners?
