Question What is your favorite item that was “donated” or passed down to you?

So I was looking through some of the items in my collection earlier (maybe I wore an item or two – don’t judge me, you know you’ve done it too!) and it got me to thinking, then my head hurt.

After the headache cleared, it made me wonder how many of you out there have have items that were donated, passed down or given to you for a small fee or favor.

It’s amazing how when you show how much passion you have for this hobby, or lifestyle depending on your level of collecting, that people say, “I have such and such I’d much rather you have it as you’ll appreciate it”.

Since getting into this hobby, I’ve had quite a few donations from friends and family members. I always return the favor with a token of appreciation (case of beer, or help with something). I’ve also been invited to some house clean outs where as payment for my labor, I was permitted to keep any items of interest to me.

So, what is your favorite “donation”? Post pictures of course as I’d love to see them.

For me, it’s a few items. First is the p38 can opener that my father in-law carried with him during his two tours in Vietnam. He held onto this for years after and one day not long ago he said, “You have it. It’s one of the only items I still have from the war. It served me well but has been hanging on a key chain since and it’s time I got rid of it.” I now display it proudly.

The other is a grouping of items that belonged to my manager’s grandfather who served in the Army during WWI. It consisted of his field binoculars, trench knife, victory medal, discharge insignia, rank insignia and various collar tabs. In appreciation of a job well done, he gave these items to me. I still returned the favor with a bottle of his favorite booze.

I look forward to seeing your items!

Yard Sale/Flea Market Finds 6/26

Hi All,
I hit the yard sales and flea markets this weekend and made some pretty nice finds.

One of my favorites would have to be the Civil War bayo for a Springfield rifle; a nice find for a good price. I however wish I had arrived at this yard sale earlier than I did as the women had 2 Springfield rifles for sale……which she sold for $20 each! :o(

My next is the War of the Nations book. It was printed shortly after WWI and contains 550 pages worth of photos of all of those who had a major influence before and during the war as well as "action shots" of troops, equipment and artillery from the war. The book measures about 11"x16", so they are nice big photos…

The European Campaign medal is one that I have been looking for, as I have the American and Pacific Campaign medals…Now I feel more complete with this is my display case. :D

Finally, the letter I am really interested in as it was sent from the German Consulate in New York in 1935. It’s written in German so maybe someone can help me to translate it to give me a general idea of what the letter is about? :D

Thanks for viewing!

I am having fun! I just learned how to upload pics on this forum, something I have avoided learning forever.

There was no need for the hesitation, because once I read the tutorials, it was all there. I’m posting 4 at once, amazing to me!!

Here are some caps, I unboxed today, I’ve had them in my workshop, my only quiet place in the world, even though it has noisy equipment. I ‘ve kept them in an old footlocker.

It’s probably not the best showing of them, but my main purpose was to learn how to start a thread and try out my new pic posting power.

A major hat tip to the how to section of this forum, thanks all!
