Military Timepieces

Posting this thread at the request of a new forum member starhidiamu. Military watch collectors are a devoted and enthusiastic group, and relatively small in number in comparison to those specializing in other areas of militaria. As such I don’t expect this thread to be a beehive of activity, and perhaps locating is in the PSZnZ section may be a better location. But there is a thread with some watch coverage there, and the first entry happens to be watch of pre war vintage :) . . .

This watch was presented to Colonel Marian Korewo by the officer corps on his retirement as CO of the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment in 1939. Korewo was a very accomplished military man whose career spanned the pre-war army through to the Polish Armed Forces in the West (brief bio posted below is from Generałowie Polski Niepodległej – T. Kryska-Karski). He held many important posts including CO of the 2nd Motorized Artillery Regiment of the 1st Armoured Division and also with the 5th Kresowa Infantry Division of the 2nd Corps. Korewo was awarded the Virtuti Militari, and was eventually was promoted to general.

Aside from the historical connection to this officer, this time piece is probably more interesting for its watch band than the actual watch. The band is actually a silver bracelet that has had a watch added. The watch is a Swiss made Cyma. The bracelet / band has a small enameled plaque bearing the crossed cannon motif of the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment. The reverse is inscribed:

(to the) Commanding Officer of the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment Colonel Marian Korewo to commemorate (your) service with the 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment from November 1st 1935 to June 21st 1939
(from the) Officer Corps

The clasp is marked with the standard Polish pre-war silver hallmarks with maker initials and a number '2' denoting .875 purity.

Looking forward to seeing other examples of military watches.

Regards,
Tony

Need help! Looking for a 104th Aero Squadron roster

Hello,

I’m looking for a roster of officers for the 104th Aero Squadron from wwi. Speciffically I’m trying to find out if there was a pilot or observer with the name R. B. Culver or somethong close to that
(hard to make out). I picked up a 104th aero squadron officers tunic and that name was written on the manufacturers tag. I’ll post pictures of the tunic soon. It has a very nice bullion 104th patch.

Thanks,
John

US Army dump - 30th May finds thread

Hi all

Well it was a good day today at the Army dump.

Thanks to Tim for organising it and clearing it with the land owner.

Thanks to everyone who turned up and made it such a great day. It was great meeting the guys in the flesh. I for one thought Shadowwolf was no where NEAR as ugly as I thought he’d be.

:D :D :D :D :D

Here’s the first picture of the finds made. These are what I took home with me. Everyone found as much as, if not more than me ! Big Al found one of the best bits……Just wait til you see it :D :D

More pictures to follow from the other guys, and from me after I’ve cleaned this lot up.

A preliminary question

I have a neighbor who is 95 years old. He fought in North Africa and D-Day, landing on Omaha Beach. He survived the fighting and ending the war in Munich. He had a lot of war trophies that were destroyed in a house fire during the early 1950's; a pity. He has one remaining piece of history remaining; a Nazi flag he took down from the Munich City Hall.

His son showed me the flag yesterday and I will try to get some pictures for you. It is huge; approximately 2 x 3 meters in size and the material appears to be cotton twill. It is blood red with the Nazi eagle in the upper left hand corner with a huge swastika in a while circle in the middle of the flag.

Any idea what this might be worth?

1957 Ritterkreuz - ‘B’ type.

Here is my 1957 version Ritterkreuz. It is a Steinhauer & Luck cross, magnetic core and unmarked.
It has the ‘B’ type core with convex oakleaves, they bulge out from the core. The ‘A’ type has concave oakleaves and look much sharper.
The loop is made from brass or a tombak alloy. The cross has been identified by others more knowledgeable than me as being an early ‘B’ type made during the 1960s because of the magnetic core, later versions were non magnetic.
The frame is nicely struck and there is a small amount of silver frosting left in the recesses.

British Flare cartridge tin

Hi Guys, a small item from my collection. A 1945 dated ammo tin for Flare pistol cartridges. Sadly empty.

6 Signals, Double Star, Yellow, Mark I.

The maker of the tin was the Metal Box Company "MB". Each of their factories had a number code.

Cheers, Ade.

Question What kind of Cap eagle?

Hi everybody, I am new here and found this forum just recently..and seems absolutely stunning to me with all well-informed members :)
I have a question about hat cap eagles - are they original? what sort that is? (with any worth?) and also I have a ordinar medal "Winterschlacht im Osten" (I think its buntmetal) but marked with number 1 on the ring…which seems weird to me as No. 1 is unusual.. Any ideas what maker it represents?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Magazine: Arnhem resurrected/Arnhem Herrijst

Hi Guys, I just took a couple of pics of this magazine for a friend as it contains some pics taken from the film "Theirs is the Glory". So I thought I would share them with you here.

The rest of the magazine from November 1946 covers the rebuilding of the town after the war.

Cheers, Ade.
