Underwater historic video from Serbia

In last 2 years me and my friends are making a documentary underwater film about ancient Roman capital city Sirmium where were 10 roman emperors. Yellow Seal is the name of the diving club in Sremska Mitrovica. Members of this club and me are exploring river Sava. We filmed scenes never seen before and I decided to make documentary film named Yellow Seal. In trailer you can see the ruins of the ancient roman Artemis bridge where Sts. Irinej was killed, parts of roman arts, harbour, galley, coins, nails and other artifacts. Also there is a French military boat sunken in Second World War, many anchors and prehistoric bones and that's not all. The best of all is that nobody has dived in Sava before. Nothing of that has been ever filmed because people think that is impossible to see anything in mud waters. That's wrong as you can see. If you are interested for a real discovery of river Sava and ancient Sirmium, please contact me. You can come to Serbia to eplore or dive together with us, as you like more.

USAAF airbase crew barracks - 22nd March 2010

Hi all

Well I decided to give one of the barrack areas of 'my' airfield one last blast.

As I thought, the area was totally clear of stuff and I was just about to leave with nothing in my finds bag...........and then I stumbled on an area that I must have somehow missed on every previous visit. It was about 10 yards past the last hut and I was surprised at the amount of stuff coming out of such a small area. When you consider the rest of the site, (which is substantial), yielding nothing.....nothing at ALL.

All these came from one little area about 10 yards square.

Firstly before cleaning.

Now unfortunately I didn't take a group shot of the after cleaning bit so we go straight into the individual bits.

Firstly a nice selection of lids. Jam was obviously very popular.

Some bits I couldn't ID, apart from the ring which I think is the rim to a pocket watch.

A couple of toys ! One lorry cab with no markings, the other the remains of a very old style racing car.

A couple of Merlin engine exhaust stub gaskets. Why they were in the barracks area heaven only knows !

Some 'O' rings, one of which still has fabric attached and is even marked on the back. Anyone know what it's off ?

Now this is a heavy and very substantial feller. I believe it is the case of a magneto, but not sure what it is off. Possibly an old motorcycle ?

This next piece is an EXCELLENT example of why you should ALWAYS take everything home to be cleaned. Assume everything is going to be of interest and only throw stuff away after you've cleaned it !

This was caked in mud and appeared to be a totally plain piece of metal. However, one clean later and hey presto !

Anyone know what the abbreviations mean ?

This is a hefty chunk of brass with the remains of green paint on it. I think it is the nozzle for a fire hose. What do you think ?

Now this piece got me REALLY excited when I dug it up :) :) An American mess tin :) :)

A French coin dated 1939, a German pebble button, a buckle off something and an odd button. It may be a pebble button but the 'pebble' bit has fallen off.

Lastly the usual cartridges although not many at all this time around.

And that's the lot. Hope you like them and can help ID some stuff.

German Tie Clasp? Help.

Hi,

I am a noob here. I was hoping I could get some help on identifying a tie clasp I found amongst my grandfathers things. He died in 1972. His son fought in WWII and was captured in Italy. The overall look of the clip reminds me of a German item, but the back of the pin has Chinese or Japanese printing on it. I have searched the web and have not found an eagle like this one on any war patch or pin of any nationality. But it does look like the Nazi's used various eagle images. Any direction would be a big help.

Regards,

Greg

Karl-Hermann Frank’s SS Helmet Sold

This was a historically significant find–the helmet of Obergruppenfuhrer Karl-Hermann Frank, which was recently discovered (and sold) by Bruce Herman. Just goes to show, "it’s still out there."

German Helmet in English hedge.

I'm a part-time archaeologist, but have to pay the rent; A couple of days ago I was stripping ivy out of a hedge on the family farm........... wasn't even looking for finds......... but theres a bit of metal in the way of the bowsaw, waggle it out and stand there stunned for a moment:

Half an M35 or 40 (rolled rim- one rivet is kind of still there, but can't tell if it's loose) German Helmet that someone dropped a grenade, or similar, in.

Metal detecting in the field came up with the usual 'background level'of .303s and, on the far side under three beech trees, some grouped blanks and 'trick-shot-pennies' (bent and stretched by a bullet, but not splattered, so put on end of vertical rifle barrel- not used as target).

General evidence of British soldiers messing about, or the old 'Weapons Safety Demo'?
