Need help! Stahlhelm M42 Normandy relic !!!!

Hi Guys,

Here is my latest Helmet, it was delivered yesterday so i would like to share it with you, for your opinons or comments.

As you can see in the photo's ( Very nicely modelled, by "Nigel" , my polystyrene mate!!) the liner is pretty much intact, apart from the leather, which lost the "battle of the rot" with the Normandy soil.

I have been reliably informed, that this little beauty was dug up somewhere between St Lo and Balleroy, i have seen another posting on this subject ( dug up by a digger ... mmm) Anyway thats its provenance!!
In the rear is stamped 3139, but sadly no makers stamp to be seen, again this stamp lost the "Battle of the rot". Rust is
my new nemisis!!
If anyone out there has any info, on how to size this helmet, that would be super duper!! Feel free to comment .
Cheers
Gaz.

LT VICTOR M. HASSELMAN-88th AERO

Victor M. Hasselman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1885. He was born to an upper class family listed in Dau's blue book. The blue book contained "….selected names of Indianapolis and suburban towns: containing the names and addresses of prominent residents, arranged alphabetically and numerically by streets, also ladies' maiden names, receiving days, and other valuable social information".

In 1915 he enlisted into a Battery A of the Field Artillery Battalion, Indiana National Guard and was part of the troops called up to guard the US/Mexican border against the incursions of Pancho Villa. In June of 1916, he was promoted to Sergeant.

After America's entry into the War, Hasselman's National Guard unit, renamed as the 150th Field Artillery was assigned to the 42nd Division.

Hasselman, now an officer was assigned as an aerial observer. From his letters, I don't think he volunteered. Unlike many of the stories that you read about the glamour of flying, Hasselman doesn't seem to have cared for it. In his letters, he writes about his desire to return to the artillery. However, I believe he could have gotten out of his assignment as he wore glasses. Also he is not enamered with the pilots, writting that it is the observers that do all of the work and the pilots just drive them around.

Hasselman's assignments included and orientation assignment with a French squadron. His letters refers to a photo that he sent home of him in his "cork and leather helmet & "fur lined" pajamas"
He then serves with the 1st aero squadron, 88th aeero squadron and fianlly assigned to the 6th Corps as the Adjutant of the 6th Corps Observation Group.

The grouping I have includes an unofficial log book, equipment stencil, promotion documents and around 20+ letters home. This was an eBay purchase several years ago, that I was quite pleased to win. Here are his flight log, and a few examples of his letters

British Mk 2

Hi Mates,

This British Mk 2 , dated 1940 , is all present and correct, ship shape and Bristol fashion.

But i have a question for you all, on the chinstrap it is written
A & C Mardorf, I do not believe this is someones name , and the research i have carried out leads me to believe , that the name refers to a shipping company. i was wondering does anyone out there, know if A & C Mardorf operated out of Plymouth UK, during WW2 ??

I have already attempted to find out this info on the web, and in my local naval history library section, but alas no info has been forthcoming.

Any info , as always would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Gaz.

Belgian M51

Hi ,
Here i have for your pleasure, A Belgian M51 (Airforce issue), this one is dated 1953 , and is a pre 1971 model as the liner is a resin layered fabric , very similiar to the US M1 style. After '71 they were produced in molded thermoplastic.
I have been informed from a another source that the Belgian Airforce classed these as a Model T-21, Anyone out there know if this could be true??

More European helmets to come, watch this space!

Cheers
Gaz
