Great uncles pigsticker!

Hello all,

I'm a little bit down this evening I'm afraid!! :(

My great uncle Joe - who is a D-Day veteran, and former Sherman tank gunner - recently told me that he'd buried his WW2 pigsticker in the garden at his old house!! I was gobsmacked!! It turns out that during the annual police weapons amnesty a few years ago, he panicked and buried the pigsticker thinking that he could get into trouble if the police knew he had it!!!

Anyway, a few months later the council completely paved his garden, and not long after he moved out!

After a few conversations with Joe, I decided to call in on the current occupant of his old house. He seemed a nice chap, and after explaining what had happened, he agreed to let me lift one of the 3x2 paving slabs, and search for Joe's pigsticker!

Today I went there armed with a few chisels, and a lump hammer! I also took a nice bottle of Brandy for the guy. After smashing through the slab, and nearly putting the spade through some cables, guess what I found.......... Nothing!!! :(

Sadly, I suspect one of the workmen who laid the slabs may have found the bayonet. On the other hand, Joe may have simply given me the wrong location!

Anyway, I come away empty handed, but the guy has invited me back for another look once the winter months arrive. It could be buried underneath the small area of flower beds on the opposite side of the garden.

The hunt continues!

Guys, thought you'd like to have a look. Regards, Hal

German chemical-plant workers passport

Hi,

Thought of sharing this interesting passport:

Possibly among the last to be issued in the Soviet Union to a German national, November 1932, Moscow.
Fritz Rusting was possibly a technical worker at a secret chemical plant in the Samara region. He was living in Chapaevsk, and in German: Tschapajewsk.
In this town, from the end of the 19th century onwards, existed the Ushkov chlorine-plant. It was taken over in 1923 by the German poisen gas specialist and entrepreneur Hugo Stoltzenberg from Hamburg in order to produce the war gas "Lost" for the German and the Soviet Army. After the failure of Stoltzenbergs engagement 1926 the plant was continued under Russian direction, while the German side beard the costs till the factory was able to produce in 1929. German funding, know-how and workers continued working at the facility. The factory delivered Lost and Diphosgen to the secret German (Reichswehr) test-area for chemical warefare at Shichany, nearby Volsk (about 100 miles southwest of Chapaevsk) and became one of the most important facilities for the Soviet chemical warfare production.

He returned back to German few weeks before Hitler came to power and later on that year all cooperation between the two countries ceased.

Neil.

Question Braunton Burrows, Devon

Normally to be found holidaying in Normandy, this year the family won and we went to North Devon. That said, the place was rich in WW2 links. Also, walking around Braunton Burrows we found these lying on the ground. I assume they are modern and related to the continued use of the area as a training ground. They are all British with RG stamps. The LMG cases have the code RG 08 L43A1 and the rifle rounds RG then either 86, 94, 04 then L1A1 or L1A2or L18A1. I assume them to be drill rounds. Can anyone confirm?

David
