Iconic Normandy photo’s Robert Capa’s Then and Now.

Most of you will probably recognise these very famous photographs because they are widely reproduced in many books supposedly taken during many diferent campaigns, Italy, the Ardennes, even Holland but they were actually taken during the US Operation Cobra in Normandy when the American forces finally broke out of their bridgehead. Robert Capa took them on the 28/07/44. They show SS prisoners who've just been captured. They are often attributed to the 17th SS Division but it's now believed that they were actually from the 2nd SS Das Reich most likely the Deutschland Regiment. There is also a paratrooper.
The first photo has no attributable background to match but the same group were photographed again photo 2 from a slightly different angle, they're being searched by Lieutenant Paul Unger of the 2nd Armoured Division Military Police. In the background is the former boys school which it now the Marie or Mayors office of the village of Notre Dame De Cenilly. In my photo I tried to get the exact angle and size of picture to match.

Next photo's were taken at Pont Brocard, the first period picture shows the muzzel of Staff Sergeant James.J.Cermack B/41st 57mm anti tank gun. He was awarded the DSC for his actions in destroying the vehicles in the picture and fighting off a counter attack.
Finally the last couple of pictures again taken in Pont Brocard but this time looking the other way show a US vehicle with 60 POW's on the back. Apparently to squeeze a few more in, the driver drove forward a little then slammed the brakes on, which helped to squash the human cargo forward just a little further.
I hope you enjoy.

Famous original photo site Tiger II’s in Normandy revisited

The Village of Canteloup is around 10km to the South East on Caen. Here Kompanie 1 of Schwere (Heavy) Panzer Abteilung 503 (who had the distinction of being equipped with some of the first Tiger II‘s) camped in the grounds of the Château for two weeks in July 1944.
You may already know the famous pictures taken here because they've been used in so many publications over the years. They show a couple of Tiger II’s in a lane hidden under tree cover and in one picture two British POW’s are seen bringing up food canteens for the crews. When I located this site I was surprised how little the scene had changed since 1944. Although the big trees have sadly been felled, new ones have replace them and it's still possible to see at the sides of the lane the original tree stumps.
A walk down the lane to the end past the church and you’ll notice to the left the now ruined Château of Canteloup, still a very impressive building, its moat has dried up and its ancient grounds are now all over grown.
Once home I sadly discovered that it had actually been used as the headquarters for the 21st Panzer Regiment and that another well known photo had been taken on the entrance steps of Oberst Hermann Von Oppeln-Bronikowski in black panzer uniform on the day he was awared the Oak Leaves to the Knights Cross (received 28th July 1944) and also the German Cross in Gold. He was awarded the Swords to the Knights Cross on 17th April 1945. If I’d only known this at the time I could have easily walked to the steps and taken a prefect match, oh well another visit for next time.
Below is my picture of the lane with the original picture merged into it. This is followed by a Picture of Oberst Hermann Von Oppeln-Bronikowski with the steps and rails behind him merged into the best picture I took showing the front of the building with the steps and railings in the distance. Next picture is just to show you how impressive the building still is even though its ruined and now overgrown and finally another original picture showing the British POW's with the Tigers.
Just a thought, The Germans always seemed to choose impressive buildings for use as headquarters.

WWII German Foreign Legion “Don Cossack” Papachka

Hello Friends,

Here is a WWII German Foreign Legion "Don Cossack" Papachka. This is a beautiful Cossack officer hat. The cockade it has is the old czarist type. Has a large metal eagle sitting on the top. There is still ink stampings legible in the hat. I received this item from Russia. I would like to share for discussion and thought.

Thanks,
Matt

Harders Hitler Bust

Hello all

As of recent a Hitler bust has come into my possession and I have no clue as to it's origin. I was curious if any of you would be able to tell me anything of it's past because I am truly curious. The bust was found nearly 40 years ago in a basement in San Mateo CA, when my aunt moved in. She never did anything with the bust, just left it where it was found. It had a slight chip on the tip of the nose, a crack in the base, and has the name "Harders" on the back of the bust. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Important! German Helmet Restoration Site

Hi Members:

I was surfing and found this helmet restoration site. The work is great and is testament to what fakes can look like these days. I'm a new helmet collector and have a few basic pieces. Members should check this site out. The site is called WWIIGermanHelmets.com. Thank goodness this guy marks his work. What does the forum think?

Need help! Its a Mystery?, WW2 German glass lid marked 95mm

Many years ago I excavated an Ardennes dug out that yielded, two german helmets (no decals) one bullet holed, a smashed false teeth plate, gas mask tin, bayonet, K98 bullets and clips, remains of M39 egg grenades and this mystery object.
Its a glass dish/lid marked SCHUTZ MARK , OPLIMA, 95mm sadly I have never been able to discover its use, maybe you can help?.
Suggestions have been that due to the German metal shortages in late 1944, glass was used as a substitute to make things like the air tight lids for shell casings, another suggestion was a lens cap for a film camera or perhaps it was for a food jar. But if it was then why is it marked with 95mm?.
I dug the site out and no jar remains were found.
Hopefully you'll have an idea what it may be?
Thanks for looking.
